Living with someone with Autism is challenging.
It is also entertaining.
Often Zoe and I talk and write about the struggles we have.
But we have just as many funny moments too.
Today I am going to share one of those moments.
Zion has had a very loud and mucous-projectile cough for the past several days. It is gross. So we have kept him home from therapy and other activities. While we are running out of creative things to do, we have pretty much let him have his way…even letting him have foods we don’t normally give him, just to keep him appeased.
So he has been asking for everything under the sun.
“Mama, can I have a donut?”
“No buddy, no donuts today.”
Yesterday morning I walked into the living room, and he was lost in one of those blank stares. Just zoned right out. I went over and sat down next to him, and snuggled him tight into my nook.
I said “Buddy, can I get you anything?”
He didn’t move a muscle, he just said “Jesus.”
I looked at him, confused.
I said “What?”
He said it again, “Jesus.”
I said “Okay Zion.”
We sat there in silence for several more minutes.
Then he said it again.
“Mama, can I have a Jesus?”
There are many times he asks us for things, and we can’t understand him.
I said “Buddy, that’s cute, I just don’t understand what you’re wanting.”
He Tiggered me right in that moment, and with his face in my face, over-enunciating each syllable said “CHEEZ-ITS.”
Ohhhhhhhhh. That. Now that makes more sense.
